Saturday was certainly a hectic day! Stacy and I had the pleasure of attending her friend's wedding during the afternoon and then had to hurry down to Philly to catch the art exhibit. The Salvidor Dali show is the only one in the United States this whole year so we felt we had to go! We met up with Sean's friend from college Lindsay and her fiance Tom Lenney. We had tickets for 7:30 and just got there in time. The museum was packed and we had to wait in line to even get into the show. As we waited we caught up with Tom and Lindsay. They're going through what Stacy and I went through about 6 months ago; the insanity that is arranging a big wedding!
The show was in chronological order and we were amazed at how different his early work was from what we all knew as 'Dali Paintings.' Although there were hints of the surrealism to come, most of his early work resembled work by impressionist painers. As he got older, and more defiant, his work grew more sexual and surreal. For the time period, most of his work was very controversial. At times it was hard to tell if he was painting for shock value or just expressing his youth. What amazed all of us was his skill even at the young age of 17. Some of his paintings are quite small and the detail is extraordinary. We figured that at some point he must've only used a single brush hair to paint the details.
